Unlike Baaba Maal and Youssou N’Dour, who both live and work in the relatively stable Senegal, most of Kidjo’s career has been undertaken in exile. She started singing aged six – the closing track on Oyo, the traditional Atcha Houn, is the first song she ever performed – but when she was 12, in 1972, Benin became a dictatorship based on Marxist-Leninist ideology.
