Rwanda questions linger: Habyarimana black box still missing

DESPITE the conclusion of investigations into the assassination of former Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, who Rwandan and international forensic investigators this week said had been assassinated by his henchmen in a bid to prevent a power-sharing deal, the black box from the plane that was carrying him the fateful day is still missing.

No black box

Habyarimana died on April 6, 1994 after his plane was hit  by two missiles said to have been launched from a camp manned by his own presidential guard.  The then Burundian president Cyprian Ntaryamira also died on in the crash.

While the investigation answers many questions over the logistics and weapons used in the attack, it is inconclusive without the recovery of the black box, suspected to have been tampered with by the first people who arrived on the scene of the crash.  IA
