i-What?
Apple has reinvented the wheel with the iPad, arguably a middle of the road hybrid of the iPhone and Macbook. The iPad is neither a notebook nor a smartphone, but a sort of mule that combines the functionality of the two, and does more. Aesthetically, it takes advantage of the Kindle market, which has softened users to devices larger than smartphones but still smaller than netbooks, and it remains to be see what exactly the iPad will carve out as its niche. After reinventing the wheel, the question any engineer would have to answer is, what is it good for, and it doesnt seem as though Apple designers have adequately answered that question yet. Yes, the iPad is great eye candy and i sure to turn heads on the metro, but what exactly will users do with it that cant be done from existing gizmos? But then again, to judge the iPad on standards set by its poor cousins, the deficient netbooks and smartphones, is to err. This is a new market, and will most likely bring new functionality. Apple has provided the solution, it seems. Now users must identify their communication and recreational needs and mold them around the iPad. IA
