Water canon in Harare
Harare – Supporters of Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have taken to the streets in the capital Harare, demanding prosecution of the perpetrators of political violence.
The march led by the Movement for Democratic Change’s youth wing comes a day after President Jacob Zuma announced that the country’s political leaders had reached a deal to resolve the long-standing political impasse that threatens the fragile unity government.
The youth have warned that failure to deal with the Zimbabwe crisis could have a negative bearing on South Africa’s hosting of the Soccer World Cup.
The march is sure to pile on the pressure on the embattled Attorney General Johannes Tomana amid furious speculation about his future. The march appears to be a hit-back at Zanu PF’s youth wing, who demonstrated a few weeks ago calling on Tsvangirai to secure the lifting of sanctions.
“As youth of Zimbabwe, we’re tired of ever-lasting negotiations. Zuma must do something to resolve this crisis otherwise the World Cup will be a problem in South Africa. As long as in Zimbabwe there’s no peace and the youth are suffering, there’ll be a crisis here,” MDC youth leader Thamsanqa Mahlangu.
The youth demonstration was one of the first MDC processions to go off without a confrontation with the police in a long time. Thulasizwe Simelane SABC NEWS
